Encounters is an ongoing body of work that I started to make when I moved back home to Staten Island in 2016.
Ultimately about a love of place, with all the multi-layered complexity those words can generate, my homecoming has been both a rediscovery and discovery, of place and of self.
The photographs are predicated on chance encounters. What I seek is a kind of magic that can exist in ordinary daily living. Many of the people I meet have a pride of place, and that dialogue with their surroundings is something I want to mark.
At times feeling like the mores of this place can easily be misconstrued and oversimplified, I find myself looking for the subtle ways in which people reveal themselves. This work is not meant to be definitive in its representation of this oft-overlooked borough, and yet I hope to broaden one’s idea and understanding of it, including my own.
